어떤 일이 일어난 순간을 말할 때는 That's when

At that time,I decided to study English.            →That's when I decided to study English.

At that time, I called my mom.                       →That's when I called my mom.

 

넓은 범위의 과거에 대해 이야기를 할 때는 Back then

At that time, I knew nothing about Korea.             Back then, I knew nothing about Korea.

Back then, I didn't like kimchi.

 

지금이랑 상황이 다른 과거의 순간이나 기간을 말할 때는 At the time

I didn't have my phone with me at that time.             →I didn't have my phone with me at the time. 

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

'앉으세요' 영어로 Sit down, please라고 하세요?

Sit down은 명령하는 느낌이 강해서 정중하지 않은 표현이다. 

please를 붙여도 정중한 명령에 가깝기 때문에 적절하지 않다. 

Would sit down? 도 마찬가지로 선생님이 학생들에게 주로 사용하는 표현이다. 

 

Please, have a seat.

Thank you for coming. Please have a seat.

Please, take a seat.

Please be seated.    (주로 기내나 교회에서 사용)

 

 

 

교과서에서 안 알려주는 Ain’t 사용법

모든 Be 동사와 not → Ain't

 

ex)

I am not stupid.                         → I ain't stupid.

You are not stupid.                     → You ain't stupid.

He is not stupid.                        → He ain't stupid.

 

사실 틀린 문법으로, 공식적인 자리에서 사용하기엔 좋지않지만 많은 미국 사람들이 자주 쓰는 표현이다.

 

 

 

미국인에게 '전화 끊어' 했더니 삐진 이유?!

한국말로 '끊어~'는 자연스러운데 Hang up은 살짝 명령(?)처럼 들릴 수 있습니다.

 

ex)

I gotta get of the phone.

I gotta go.

I gotta let you go.

I'll talk to you later. Bye.

I'll hit you up later. Bye.

 

 

'개 같다' 영어로도 욕일까?

한국어에서는 '개' 댄어에 부정적인 느낌이 있죠? 영어로는 느낌이 다르답니다!
