유튜브/올리버쌤 - ‘옛날에’를 설마 long long time ago라고 하시나요?

long long time ago는 의미는 통하지만 약간 아쉬운 표현이다.

 

A long time ago 가 더 자연스러운 표현이다.

 

ex)

A long time ago, tigers lived in Korea.

I met him a long time ago.

 

In the olden days, we didn't have cell phones.

In the olden days, ice cream was really cheap.

 

Once upon a time, there was a boy that lived in the forest.

동화나 이야기를 시작하는 '옛날 옛적에'라는 의미이다.

 

'뚱뚱하다'를 영어로 Fat이라고 하시나요?

fat은 뚱뚱하다는 의미가 맞기는 하지만 지방, 기름이라는 의미가 있기 때문에 더욱 부정적인 느낌이다. 

때문에 조금은 순화해서 사용하는게 좋다.

 

ex)

I was a little on the heavy side when i was a kid.

She was kind of on the heavy side when i first met him.

He's a big guy.

I got kind of big over the summer.

She was chubby when she was a kid.

 

 

Not fun은 재미없다는 말이 아닙니다!

Not fun은 즐길만한 것이 전혀 없다. 그래서 괴로움만 남았다는 의미이다.

즉 괴롭다, unpleasant의 의미로 이해하면 된다.

 

ex) 

You have three tests today? That's not fun at all.

You have to work on Christmas? That can't be fun.

I had to walk for an hour to get to the gas station. It wasn't fun!

 

 

‘나한테 욕하지마!’ 우습지 않게 제대로 말하려면?

욕설이라는 표현은 성경에서 유래된 swear word, curse word, cuss word 등이 있다. 

 

ex)

Did you just swear at me?

Stop swearing in front of the children!

Hey, Don'y curse at me.

I got in trouble for cussing at the teacher.

 

He cursed me.

이처럼 at을 사용하지 않으면 저주했다라는 의미로 전혀 다른 표현이 된다.
