"그동안"은 영어로 During that time?!

문법적으로 틀린 문장은 아니지만, 한국식 표현이다.

In the mean time 이 자연스러운 표현이다.

 

ex)

The movie starts in two hours. During that time let's go shopping

→ The movie starts in two hours. In the meantime let's go shopping

 

I need to finish my homework first. During that time, why don't you watch TV?

→ I need to finish my homework first. In the meantime, why don't you watch TV?

 

She's going to be here in five minutes. Let's make some tea during that time.

→ She's going to be here in five minutes. Let's make some tea In the meantime.

 

* in the meantime은 예상하는 일이 일어나기 전의 기간이라는 의미이다.

 

 

‘나도’는 영어로 Me too? | 한국인 80%가 실수하는 표현

상대방이 나에게 'Nice to meet you' 라고 말했다면

'Nice to meet you too'라고 대답하거나 'You too'라고 대답해야한다.

 

만약 'Me too' 대답하면 '나도 날 만나서 반갑습니다.' 라는 이상한 표현이 된다. 

혹은 Likewise

 

ex)

A : It was great meeting you

B : It was great meeting you too. / You too. / Likewise (마찬가지에요)

 

 

미국인에게 거의(?) 욕으로 들리는 말?!

'You look very tired', 'You look sick'

너 오늘 좀 아파보인다, 피곤해보인다 같은 표현은 미국인에게는 거의 욕으로 들린다.

이런 표현은 너 오늘 진짜 못생겼다. 못 봐주겠다는 식으로 받아들여질 수 있다.

외모에 대한 부정적인 이야기를 잘 안하는 문화 때문에 걱정해주는 표현을 못생겼다는 의미로 이해할 수 있다. 

 

 

am not 줄이면 amn't 이 될까? | 교과서에 안 나오는 문법

are not      → aren't 

is not        → isn't

 

am not      → am I not? / aren't I (친구들끼리 이야기할때)

 

ex)

I'm your friend, aren't I?

I'm good at painting, aren't I?

I'm your lover, aren't I?

 

 

미국인에게 Stupid(바보)라고 하면 생기는 일

'바보'는 한국에서는 가벼운 비속어로 사용되서 가까운 친구가 연인, 가족끼리 편하게 쓸 수 있지만 영어에서는 생각보다 강한 욕으로 아이큐를 따지는 느낌, 지능이 낮다고 하는 느낌이 강하기 때문에 무례한 표현이 될 수 있다. 

 

미국에서는 이럴 때 silly라는 표현을 대신할 수 있다. 

You're so silly.

That was silly.

혹은 Oh,, (상대방 이름),,

 

I'm pooped = 똥쌌다는 뜻일까?!

사전을 검색하면 poop은 똥이라고 나오지만 이렇게 사용될 때는 나는 완전히 지쳤다는 의미이다.

격식이 있는 표현은 아니다.

ex)

I'm pooped.

I'm really pooped out.

You must be pooped.

You look pooped out.

 

 

"잘 먹겠습니다" 영어로 할 수 없다?!

영어에는 비슷한 표현이 없기 때문에 프랑스어인 Bon apetit를 사용하거나 다음 표현들을 사용한다.

ex)

Enjoy your meal.

Let's eat.

Dig in.

 

식사를 대접받은 경우엔

Thank you for the meal.

 

에일리언은 외계인이라는 뜻일까?!

외국인에게 ‘Why did you come to Korea?’ 하시나요?

문법적으로 완벽하지만 상황이나 말투에 따라 공격적인 표현이 될 수 있다. 

 

ex)

Why did you choose Korea?

What made you want to come to Korea?

So, why Korea?

 

'몸에 좋아' 영어로 하면 Good for body?

'Good for body', 'Good for health' 는 잘못된 표현이다.

 

ex)

It's good for you.

It's healthy.

It's good for your ( circulation/skin 등 어디에 좋은지 ).

 

 

맛집 : 영어로 번역할 수 있을까?

작고 허름하지만 맛있는 음식을 파는 곳을 Hole in the wall 이라고 한다.

 

ex)

I know this really good hole in the wall.                            나 끝내주는 맛집 알아.

It's a hole in the wall, but the food is really good.

Mario's pizza is really popular hole in the wall restaurant.
